Areas of Experience:

AlAl began his legal career with the Legal Aid Society of Westchester County – Criminal Division, where he appeared in nearly every local court in Westchester County as well as serving as defense counsel in over thirty felony trials. In December, 1982, he went into private practice, first as a partner in a two man firm in Mineola with a concentration in Real Estate and then returning to Westchester where he became a partner in a small general practice firm with concentrations in criminal law, real estate and family law.

After eleven years in the private sector, Al entered the New York State Court system as Principal Law Secretary to the Hon. Kenneth H. Lange of the Westchester County Court. While working with Judge Lange, Al assisted in the day to day functions of the court as well as in several high profile cases including the trial of People v. Alvarez in 2003, the first and only capital prosecution in Westchester County since the reenactment of the death penalty in 1995. After Judge Lange’s retirement, Al served as Principal Law Secretary to the Hon. Gerald Loehr and now serves in that capacity with the Hon. Susan Cacace.

In May, 2000, Al was appointed Judge of the Westchester County Court and served in that capacity through the end of the year. Al has also served as Acting Village Justice in the Village of Buchanan (1996 – 2000) and now serves as Acting Village Justice in the Village of Sleepy Hollow.

In addition, Al has served for thirty years as a commissioned officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Army Reserve where he holds the rank of Colonel. Among his Reserve assignments, he has served as Deputy Commander of the 4th Legal Services Organization and Staff Judge Advocate of the 77th Regional Readiness Command. In November, 2001, in the aftermath of September 11th, Al was called to active duty for one year, serving with the 25th Infantry Division (L) at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. There, he served as Deputy Staff Judge Advocate of the Division as well as serving as Trial Counsel in Courts-Martial, Administrative Law Attorney and Special Projects Officer. Recently, Al has served a tour in Kabul, Afghanistan with the Combined Security Transition Command – Afghanistan as Senior Legal Advisor to the Commander in the area of detainee operations.
